The next couple of days were touch and go.
Sarah was so weak, all she wanted to do was sleep.
Susie refused to leave her side.
She was worried that Sarah would give up and God would call her
home. It was only two days
until her birthday and Sarah had wanted so badly to have her tea party and
trip to Build A Bear, and see all her friends that she hadn’t seen in so
long. It would be so much fun.
It gave Susie an idea, maybe they could have the party in Sarah’s
room. It might be just what
Sarah needed. She would run it
by Dr. Matthews and Bill and see what they thought.
For the first time in months, Susie felt happy.
Bill came back from the cafeteria and Susie started telling him her
idea, he loved it. They were
both so caught up in the moment that they didn’t even hear Dr. Matthews
come in. “My, my,”
He said. “Looks like
you two are having a great time, I hate to spoil it for you but I have
some news.” Susie’s mood
changed quickly as she turned and saw Dr. Matthews face.
‘It couldn’t be good,’ she thought.
Bill said, "Please,
Dr. Matthews, tell us what's going on." Dr. Matthews said, "Lets
go down to the waiting room, there is no need to wake Sarah." Bill
took Susie's hand and they followed him to the waiting room. Dr.
Matthews said, "Listen guys, there is no easy way to say this, the tests
have all come back and well.. Sarah's heart is very bad, her body is
very weak. We have put her on the heart transplant list, but I
don't know if she can hang on that long. I am so sorry, I know
this is not what you were hoping to hear. I'll go check on her
while you two talk, and once again, I'm so sorry. I was hoping for
a better outcome too."
