Chapter 2  Page 3

A Baby Brother For Sarah

Bill heard Susie calling out in her sleep, and said, "Susie, Susie are you alright
Susie?" She looked around and saw that she was back in her hospital bed.
Bill was sitting on the side of the bed looking so worried, he rubbed her arm and said, "Honey are you okay? You were crying out in your sleep for your mom, are you hurting again? Should I get the nurse?"  Susie sat up in the bed,
reaching for Bill she said, "No Bil,l just hold me.  Please just hold me."
Bill put his arms around her and held her close. He said, "Susie you are shaking, are you sure you are okay ? Did you have a bad dream ?"  'I must have been dreaming,' Susie thought to herself.  'It must have all been a dream.' She told Bill about seeing her mom in her dream. She said,  "Sarah is right Bill, she is so beautiful, even more than I remember.  What do you think she meant about Justin Bill, do you think he will be okay?"  "I pray he will Susie, but only God knows the answer to that."  About that time the nurse came in to take her to get the ultra sound.

A little while later Dr. Roberts came in and said, "How's the pain Susie?" "It is better for now,"  she said, "Please Dr. Roberts, Is the baby okay?"  Dr. Roberts smiled and answered, "The little guy is fine Susie, that's not the problem, that's not where the pain is coming from.  I'm afraid we have a bigger problem folks."  Susie looked at Bill and squeezed his hand tightly, and said, "What do you mean Dr. Roberts?"  He said,  "The ultra sound shows that there is a tumor on you're cervices, Susie.  It's about the size of a golf ball,
perhaps a little bigger." Tears ran down Susie's face as she asked the next question, afraid to hear the answer, "Is it cancer Dr. Roberts?"  Bill, who had sat there speechless, spoke up and said, "Lets not even think that way Susie". "That's right, said Dr. Roberts,  First lets get a biopsy, then we'll see what our options are. I'll set it up for tomorrow morning, you try and get some rest tonight". After Dr. Roberts left, Bill held  Susie in his arms and said. "It will be okay, Susie, I just know it will." Susie looked into Bills big brown eyes and said "I pray you're right Bill, I just pray you're right."

"Right now Bill, I think you should go home, Sarah must be so scared, she has never seen me sick before."  Bill said, "Susie, I already called my mom. She said Sarah is just fine. I am not leavening  Susie, not until we know what's going on. We are in this together honey, remember our wedding vows? They said in sickness and in health, so I am staying, Susie." Then he leaned down and kissed her and said, "Now you get some rest." She smiled at him, as she looked into those beautiful brown eyes of his and thought to herself, 'how did I ever get so lucky?' Then she laid down and put  her hand on her tummy and said, "You hang in there sweetie, we love you very much."  Soon she drifted off to sleep.

The next morning around  eight  the nurse came and got Susie ready. Dr. Roberts stopped by to talk to her for a few minutes. He said, "It won't take long to do the biopsy, they will check it in minutes, if it is cancer we will go ahead and remove the tumor,  we may have to deliver Justin too." Bill looked at Dr. Roberts and said, "Won't that be too soon for Justin?" " He should be just fine," Dr. Roberts said, "A lot of babies are four weeks early, so I'll see you in a little while Susie. And Bill, I will talk to you when it's over."  Dr. Roberts left and Bill put his arms around Susie and said, "It will be alright Susie." "I hope so Bill, for all our sakes." The medicine started to take effect then, and she drifted off to sleep.

Soon they came to take her to surgery. Bill took out his Bible and began to read and pray. He walked back and forth in the waiting room, it seemed like forever.  Soon Dr. Roberts came out and said, "Bill, Susie is fine, you can see her soon, but I'm afraid the biopsy showed it is cancer. It was larger then we thought, and I'm not sure if we got it all.  But on to better news, I have someone I want you to meet."  A nurse walked out of the surgery room doors holding something.  She walked over to Bill and said, "Mr. Kendell, I'd like you to meet your son." Tears ran down Bills face as he cradled Justin in his arms.
He looked down at that tiny little face and said, "You look just like your sister." About that time they wheeled Susie out into the hall way. Bill walked over to her and kissed her forehead and said, "He's beautiful Susie, and so is his mom, how do you feel sweetie?"  "Hurting," she said, trying to smile, but glad to finally get to see Justin.  Bill said, "Well, you get some rest honey and I'll call Mom and check on Sarah."  Susie who was still groggy from the medicine said, "Okay, Bill I will."  She closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
