Chapter 3 Page 9

Life Without Susie
(Eight Years Later)

Later they arrived at Susie's house. Her grandmother met them at the door. Susie said, "Hi Grandma, this is Pastor Kendell from the church down the road. Pastor Kendell, this is my grandmother, Mary Wade." "Nice to meet you," Bill said. Susie told her grandmother that if it was alright with her that the Pastor had invited her to his daughter's birthday party. "I'd really like to go, is it okay?" Mary said, "If you would like to honey, I think that would be great, I have told you that you need to get out more and not stay cooped up with this old lady so much." Susie laughed and hugged her and said, Grandma, you know I love being with you." Mary said, "I know honey, now don't keep the pastor waiting, go get dressed." Susie kissed Mary's cheek and said, "Okay and thanks Grandma, I love you." Mary said, "Your welcome honey, and I love you too, now go get dressed."

After she had left the room, Bill talked to Grandma Mary and explained how he had met Susie. He told her how upset and afraid she was that if something happened to her, she'd be left all alone again. Then he told Mary his idea to have Susie come and stay with him and his children in the event of her death. He said, "She is a very lovely young lady, and we seem to of hit it off very nicely and I think my kids would love her too." Mary said, "You are right, she is a wonderful person, and I know she has had a lot of sadness in her short life, and I have been worried about what would happen to her when I die." Bill said, "I know Mary, so you just think about it and let me know and I'll have some papers drawn up giving me custody of her, in the event of your death. I promise you she'll never be unhappy or want for anything for the rest of her life." "Thank you Pastor Kendell, you are so kind, I hardly know what to say," Mary said, "But I need to think about this, and I'll want to talk to Susie about it."

Bill assured her that he understood. "You take all the time you need." Just then he heard Susie's voice and looked up and could not believe his eyes. Susie stood there in a pale yellow knee length dress and she looked absolutely beautiful. Grandma Mary walked over to her with tears in her eyes and said, "Oh Susie, you are so beautiful, you look just like your mom." Susie said, Thank you Grandma, but please don't cry." Okay," Mary said, "Now you have a good time." Susie hugged her and said she would. Mary told the Pastor what a pleasure it was to meet him and that they would talk again real soon. Bill and Susie left to go to Bill's house.

On the way home Bill's cell phone rang. It was Sarah calling. He answered and said, "Hi sweetie, what's wrong?" Sarah said, "Nothing Dad, I was just checking on you, are you Okay?" "Oh yes honey, I'm fine, I'm on the way home and I'm bringing a guest." "Really?" she said, "Is it anyone I know?" Bill said, "No honey, but it's someone I want you to get to know. I'm sure you will like her, so you just get ready and we'll be there soon." Sarah giggled and said, "Okay Dad I will, and hurry home but be safe, okay?"
