As Justin returned, his face was white as a sheet and tears were pouring
down his face.
Sarah said, "What is it, Justin, what's wrong?"
She looked past him at the doctor coming down the hall, he said,
"I am so sorry, I was just coming for you when your brother came up.
Your dad has had yet another stroke, you may want to come in and
see him. I'm sorry, but I don't think he'll pull through."
Sarah,
who was always the strong one, fell to her knees and wept. Mike reached
down and pulled her up and held her close, as Susie cried in John's arms.
Justin just stood there, trying to come to terms with having to say
goodbye to his dad.
Sarah finally composed herself and and asked Dr. Davis, "Is he
awake, Doctor?"
"He is in and out, Sarah," He answered, "And I'm not
sure if he will know you are there.
I wish I had better news, my heart goes out to all of you, I wish
there was something more I could do."
Sarah thanked him and told him he'd been just great to their dad
all these years, "We know you've done your best," she said.
"Now he's in God's hands."
The five of them walked slowly toward Bill's room.
Sarah said, "I don't think we should overwhelm him, so Justin,
why don't you go in first?"
Justin stood there, unsure of whether he could do this alone."
Sarah
walked over and hugged him, "You can do it, Justin.
Just talk to him, tell him how you feel about him.
Most of all, we all need to tell him it's okay to go.
I know it's not going to be easy, but he needs to hear that we love
him and we will be okay without him. I don't want him to linger in pain
just because of us."
