Around two o'clock
that afternoon the nurses came in to take Sarah for a walk so Susie
could decorate the party. While she was doing that, Dr. Matthews
came by and said, "It looks really good in here. "Oh, hi Dr.
Matthews," Susie said. "Yes, the nurses brought this little
round table and chairs for the girls. It makes it look more like
home. I think she will like that." Dr. Matthews said, "Well,
save a spot for Build A Bear, they will be here." "How did you
manage that?" Susie exclaimed. "Lets just say I have
connections," he said and winked. Susie said, "Thanks, Dr.
Matthews." Then she gave him a big hug.
Just then Bill
walked in and said, "Do I need to be worried here?" and then he
laughed. Susie laughed and said, "Oh Bill, don't be silly, I was
just thanking Dr. Matthews. He was able to get Build A Bear to
come here to the hospital, isn't that wonderful? Sarah will be so
happy, she wanted to go there so badly, now she will be able to do it
right here and won't miss out on it. This is going to be a
birthday to remember." "Indeed it is," said Bill. "And
thank you Dr. Matthews, I don't know how you did it, but thank you."
"Well, lets get this party set up," said Dr. Matthews, "Sarah will
be back soon."
In just a little
while the nurses brought Sarah back. Susie met them in the
hallway, Sarah looked so tired that it worried Susie. She thought
to herself, 'Please Lord, let her make it through this day, and let her
have fun.' It wasn't very often anymore that Susie saw Sarah very
happy. She was always so tired and in pain, but Susie put on a
brave face and said, "Okay birthday girl, I have a surprise for you."
The girls had arrived and they were all waiting inside for Susie, and so
were the people from Build A Bear. "Are you ready to see your
surprise?" Susie asked. Sarah's eyes lit up and she smiled
that beautiful smile of hers and said, "Yes I am Mommy, yes I am."
"Good," said Susie, "Now lets get this party started."
