Chapter 2  Page 5

A Baby Brother For Sarah

When they got to the nursery to see Justin, Sarah was so excited. "Which one is he, Daddy? There are so many," laughed Sarah. Bill tapped on the glass and the nurse pushed Justin to the window. Sarah's eyes just sparkled, she said, "He's so cute, Daddy." Then tiny tears filled her eyes. Bill picked her up and said, "What is it honey?" Sarah just hugged his neck tightly and said, "I am just so glad he's here, Daddy. I prayed last night and asked Jesus to please help my little brother. I told Him if He needed to, He could give him my new heart. I told him I would miss you and Mommy, but Justin needs you now." Tears filled Bill's eyes as well as Grandma Kate's. He hugged her even tighter and said, "That was sweet of you, Sarah but Justin is fine and Mommy and me need both of you. After all, we are a family, and families stick together. So don't you worry honey, we'll all be okay. Now lets go see if Mommy is up." Sarah said, "Okay Daddy," and she turned and blew a kiss to baby Justin and said, "Don't worry little fellow, we'll be back." And off they went to Susie's room.

Susie was sitting up in bed looking so tired, but the minute she saw Sarah's little face, her eyes lit up. She stretched out her arms and said, "Baby girl come give Mommy a hug." Sarah darted over to Susie's bed and hugged her close and said, "I missed you so much, Mommy! How do you feel?" Susie tried to smile and said, "I'm okay sweetie, don't you worry about me." Sarah said, "I'll try not to Mommy, I promise. I got to see Justin, he is so cute! I can't wait until I can hold him and play with him." "Me too," said Susie, "I only got to see him for a minute, how is he?" Kate walked over and kissed Susie on the forehead and said, "He's fine Susie, you just worry about getting well so you can take him home." Susie smiled faintly and said, "Thanks Kate, I will try. You have been such a blessing." Kate said, "I am glad to help Susie, anytime."

Bill turned to Susie and thought she was sleeping. Then she yawned a little and he sat down beside her and held her hand, he said, "Why don't you try to sleep honey?" Susie yawned again and said, "Maybe I should, I am a little tired." Kate said, "I'll take Sarah home for awhile, we'll be back later, dear, you just rest. You'll need all the rest you can get when you take Justin home, you may not get much rest." Sarah hugged Susie and said, "Bye Mommy, I love you." Susie smiled and hugged her close and said, "I love you too, Sarah, to the moon and back." Then they both giggled. Bill hugged Sarah and his mom and said, "You two have a good day and thanks again, Mom for everything." Kate hugged him tightly and kissed his cheek and said, "Don't worry too much, son, everything will be okay." Then she and Sarah left to go home.

Bill settled down in a chair next to Susie's bed and began reading his bible. Thoughts seemed to run through his head so he started praying, "Dear Lord, you know I never ask for much, and I am so grateful for all you have given me. My family, my home, my job and my health. But Lord, I just come to you today with a heavy heart and ask you to heal Susie, so that she can live to hold her children and watch them grow, and Lord I just don't know if I'm strong enough to let her go, or to raise these children without her." Then he begin to weep, this once strong man of God felt that his whole world was crumbling down around him. He was so overcome with grief that he hardly noticed when Susie reached out and put her hand on his shoulder. In a weak voice she said, "It's okay Bill, I am here and I'm not giving up. I have too much to live for." Bill leaned over and put his arms around her and they cried together, then she said, "We haven't come too far to quit now, Bill, and Bill, you don't always have to be the strong one. It doesn't make you any less a man in my eyes." Bill smiled at her and those big brown eyes of his that she adored sparkled once more.
