Just then Dr. Roberts knocked on the door. He
said, "I hate to interrupt but we need to talk." Bill sat up in
the chair and said, "It's okay Doctor, come on in." Dr. Roberts
stepped into the room and pulled up a chair next to Susie's bed, "How
are you feeling, Susie?" he said. Susie smiled a little and said,
"I have felt better." Doctor Roberts chuckled and said, "I
bet you have, Susie." Then he said, "Look, there is no sense in
beating around the bush, we didn't get all the tumor, it has spread too
far. I think if we do a hysterectomy, then do chemo, we may have a good
chance of getting rid of it all, but I can't promise you that it will
work, it is a fast growing cancer, so we need to get started as soon as
possible." Susie looked at Bill with tears in her eyes, then at Dr.
Roberts and said, "Whatever we have to do, lets do it so I can get
back to a normal life with my family, after all, I have a new baby to take
home." Dr. Roberts said, "I will set everything up and then
we'll talk again. I'll let you get back to your talk and you get some
rest, Susie." She thanked the doctor and said, "I will."
After the doctor left, Susie turned to Bill
and said, "Looks like Justin will be our last one, Bill." Tears
ran down her face as she realized that she and Bill could never have
another child. Bill took her hand and said, "It's okay Susie, we have
plenty. God has really blessed us." "I know He has Bill, He has
really been good to us." Then she squeezed his hand tighter and said,
"That's not the worst of it Bill, what if the treatments don't work?
What if I die, Bill? What if you have to raise the children alone? What if
I never get to see them grow up?" Tears poured down her face. Bill
said, "Stop Susie, don't say things like that, I could not imagine
life without you, please don't give up, please." Then he held her in
his arms and they cried together like two frightened children.
After they calmed down, Susie said to Bill,
"Lets go see Justin, I need to hold him and let him know his mama
loves him so much. And lets call your mom and get her to bring Sarah for a
visit, I really just need to be with all of you right now." Bill
kissed her forehead and said, "Sounds like a great idea to me."
He called his mom and she said she would bring Sarah, that they would be
there in an hour. Then he and Susie walked down to the nursery. When they
got there the nurse was feeding Justin. She smiled at Susie and said,
"Would you like to feed him, Susie?" Susie beamed with pride as
she looked at her precious son. She said, "I would love to,
thanks." She sat down and held Justin and as she fed him, she knew
she had to fight the cancer. She had to be there for her kids, and for
Bill. They were all she had. As tears ran down her face, she looked at
Bill and said, "This makes all the pain worth it. Whatever I have to
do to stay with you and the kids, I know now I can do it." She looked
at Justin and he was sleeping, she kissed his tiny face and said,
"Mama loves you baby boy." Then she laid him down in his little
basinet and covered him up.
