When the doctor left the room, Bill
looked at Susie and said, "Now young lady, lets get you some
rest." "Okay," she said, "I will, I promise."
Bill said, "Okay, I will go and make some phone calls and get a bite
to eat, and I will see you in a little while." Then he kissed her and
said, "I love you, Susie." Susie said, "I know you do,
Bill, that's what keeps me going." So Bill left and Susie dozed off
to sleep. She heard someone calling to her, she opened her eyes and
thought she saw her mother. She rubbed her eyes and said, "Mom, is
that really you?" Doris said, "Yes Susie, it's really me. I'm
really here." "But, Mom, why are you here? I don't
understand." Doris said, "I wanted to see you, Susie. I wanted
to tell you not to be afraid and that I love you, honey and I will be with
you always." "Mom, am I going to die? Is that why you're here?
Please Mom, tell me."
Then she heard Bill calling her, he
said, "Susie, are you okay?" Susie sat up in her bed and looked
around. "Yes Bill," she said, "But where did my mom
go?" "Your mom? You must of been dreaming. I heard you crying
out as I came into the room, you sounded so scared." "It was my
mother, she was here, Bill. She talked to me and told me not to be afraid,
she said she loved me and she always would. I asked her if I was going to
die but she never answered me, then she was gone. I don't understand, what
do you think she meant by it?" Then Susie started crying
uncontrollably. It really scared Bill, so he called for the nurse. She
came in and gave Susie a shot. She said, "You need to rest Susie, you
are just stressed out. With all that's going on, it's no wonder." The
nurse pulled Bill aside and said, "She will sleep for awhile now. I
think the last few weeks are just catching up with her."
"Thanks," Bill said, "I'll just sit with her while she
sleeps." "Okay," she answered, I will check on her later.
If you need me, just put on the light." "I will," said
Bill, as the nurse was leaving, "And thanks."
Bill sat beside Susie's bedside and
prayed. He said, "Lord, I come to you tonight and ask you to watch
over Susie. Tomorrow as she goes through this surgery, I ask that you be
in that operating room and that you guide the doctor's hands. I ask you to
take away all the cancer cells in Susie's body, Lord, and make her whole
again. In Jesus mighty name I pray. Amen." He held onto Susie's hand
as she slept, he was so worried about her. He had never seen her as upset
as she was earlier. mHe got up and went out in the hall and called his
mom. He told her about the surgery the next day and about how Susie had
gotten so upset. He said, "Mom, I am so worried about her. Sometimes
she seems like she is just giving up and that really scares me." Kate
said, "Bill, don't worry, Susie is stronger than you think, and I
know she will fight to stay with you and the kids. You just remember that,
Bill and just pray for her. That's all you can do. It will all work out,
honey. I just know it will." "I pray you're right, Mom,"
Bill said, "I just pray you're right."
He hung up the phone and went back
into Susie's room. She was still sound asleep, so he sat in the chair next
to her bed and tried to rest. He must have finally dozed off, when all of
a sudden Susie cried out in her sleep. Bill jumped up and rushed over to
the bed. He said, "What is it, Susie, are you okay?" She didn't
answer. Bill touched her head, she was hot, very hot. He pushed the call
button and the nurse rushed in. "Bill said, "She's very hot,
what's going on? Why the fever?" The nurse said, "I don't know,
Bill. Lets check her temperature and call Dr. Roberts." Her
temperature was 104. She paged Dr. Roberts and told him what was going on.
He said, "I'll be right there." They gave Susie some medicine
and it brought her temperature down a little. Dr. Roberts came in and
checked her over and ordered some blood work. Then he said to Bill,
"I think she has an infection, we'll know more when we get the blood
test results back. But we will have to cancel the surgery for tomorrow.
I'll put a rush on the test and I'll be back in a little while and talk to
you." "Okay," Bill said, and he sat next to Susie and
prayed.
