Chapter 3 Page 12

Life Without Susie
(Eight Years Later)

As the night was almost over Sarah walked out onto the balcony of the building and looked up at the stars and said, "I wish you could be here Mom. Can you believe your little girl is sixteen?" Bill walked up behind her and said, "I believe she is here Sarah, and she will always be here in our hearts." He hugged her, then Sarah gasped, "Dad look!" As Bill turned he saw the most brilliant shooting star he'd ever seen. People were coming out to see it, Sarah said, "It's her Dad, she really is here." Then she looked up to the sky and said, "To the moon and back Mom, forever and always." Her night was complete and all her wishes were fulfilled.

Later they took Susie home and made plans to have her spend the weekend with them. On the ride home Bill told Sarah and Justin Susie's story and how they met at the church. "I think it was a sign from God that we met the way we did," Bill said. "I got caught up in the moments of grief listening to her story and I promised her I would look after her when her grandma dies, so I thought we should get to know her. What do you guys think of having a new sister?" Bill waited for an answer, but instead there was silence. He pulled the car over and looked at the two of them, tears were running down their faces, he said, "Guys don't cry, it was just a thought." The two of them started to speak at the same time. Sarah said, We're not crying 'cause we're upset about Susie, it's because of what she has gone through. It makes us even more thankful God gave us wonderful parents. We would love to share you with Susie." Then the three of them hugged and Justin said, "Lets go home Dad, I'm cold." They all laughed and headed for home.

The next week end Susie came over and they went bowling and to the movies. They had a great time. As the months went by they spent lots of time together. Soon they felt like one big happy family again. Everything seemed right with the Kendell family. Two months later Susie's grandmother died and Susie, who was now fourteen years old, came to stay with Bill and the kids and a year later Bill adopted her. That was the happiest day in Susie's life. She now had a wonderful family and even though she still missed her mom and brother and her grandma, she felt safe and happy for the first time since she was six years old. Bill did just what he told her he would do that day he met her at church, he promised her that he would take care of her and keep her safe, He had kept that promise.

Now Bill had a house full and felt so very blessed. Sarah was almost eighteen, Susie was almost fifteen and Justin was almost ten. Bill looked up and said, "Well Susie, we have that big family you always wanted. I just hope I survive the teenage years." and then he laughed. He gave thanks to the Lord above and ended by saying, just keep us in your care,
Lord. Amen.
