Goodbye To Bill

 

Sarah was surprised when she got a call from the local E. R. late one night.  It was Bill, he'd had a stroke.  Sarah called her sister and brother and said, "Get to the hospital right away, Dad's had a stroke."  All the way to the hospital she prayed, "Please Lord, don't take him yet. We still need him Lord, give him the courage and strength to go on, In Jesus name, Amen."
 
She pulled into the hospital parking lot, this is where she had spent so many years, sick. And where her mom and Grandma Kate had died. I hate this place, she whispered under her breath, as she got out of the car.  As she started in, she heard someone calling her name, she turned to see Susie coming up behind her, they hugged each other close and Susie said, "Is he okay?"  "I don't know, Susie, the nurse just said to come right away, that's all I know."  Then a car came speeding into the parking lot, slamming on the breaks, it was Justin.  He ran up to Sarah and Susie, crying like a baby, "Is he alive?  Did I make it on time?"  Sarah said, "Listen Justin, we need to be strong for Dad, okay? I don't know anything yet, I haven't been inside, come on guys, lets be brave for Dad.  Lets be there for him as he has always been there for us."  The three of them walked in, clutching each others hands real tight, not knowing for sure what they were about to face.

They walked up to the nurse's station and Sarah asked about Bill. The nurse said, "He is in room 6-A, but I think the doctor is with him. You can go ahead and check if you would like."  "Thanks, we will," Sarah said and they walked down to the room. The doctor was just coming out of the room so Sarah spoke up and said, "Hello Dr. Davis, how is he?  Can we see him?"  "Hello Sarah," he said, "Well, first of all, he is in very bad shape, we are waiting for a room so we can admit him.  He may not know you, he has lost some of his memory and speech.  He's lost the use of his right side,
